Why am I feeling drained?!

We're all just one big ball of energy, but sometimes we feel anything but energetic.

Let's get energised!

If you are reading this as I publish, it's the end of January and a lot of us are feeling a bit meh. The excitement of the holidays and the New Year have passed... so what now?

Energy is no real mystery.

"Passion is energy. Feel the power that comes from focusing on what excites you." - Oprah

Yep, that Oprah knows a thing or two!

The things you do, the people you see, the places you go, the food you eat - it either drains you or amps you up.

Ever notice how you walk away from seeing some friends and you feel so full of energy and excited? Well, give them a gold star in your life as they are officially one of your energy gainers.

To keep this sweet and simple, everything in your life affects your energy. And it is going to be different for each of us. What excites and energises me, might be a bit of a drainer for you. Want the answers? Keep on reading.

Four types of energy

When we think of energy (and the lack thereof), we tend to think about our physical energy. But that's only one piece of the energy pie.

Yep, there are four major sources and forms of energy, and it's important you look at each one of them when you are wanting to keep that battery fully charged.

**I've given some examples of what might have each area low or high in energy, but these lists are just a thought starter as there can be hundreds of different reasons in each area.

One - Physical

Let's start with the obvious one that we usually focus on most. This is our physical self. Our ability to perform. Feeling good in our body.

Low: not enough sleep, poor nutrition, stress, sedentary life.

And of course when you have the opposite of the above, you are likely to have a bit more pep in your step.

High: getting enough rest, eating healthy, staying hydrated, exercise.

Two - Mental

Oh we all know when our mental energy is low. Complaints of brain fog, lack of focus, can't concentrate, and low attention span.

Low: dehydration, overworked, overthinking (aka getting stuck in your head analysing something over and over).

High: achieving something new, learning, removing distractions, mindfulness, ticking tasks off your list.

Side note: The above two energy types, physical & mental, sit within our masculine energy, which focus on things that are a bit more in our control and tangible.

Three - Emotional

Oh our emotional energy is usually quite charged in one direction or the other. This is all about our nervous system, ability to show compassion, and our experience of the world around us.

Low: comparison-itis (aka worrying about how you compare to others), fixed mindset, unhealthy relationships, financial problems, stress.

High: healthy relationships, journaling, growth mindset, new experiences, pets.

Four - Spiritual

This one can be the hardest for some people to get in touch with, but it's all about living with purpose and feeling connected with others. That sense that there is something bigger than we are. (note: this is not about religion)

Low: self-absorbed, victim-mode (aka: why me syndrome), sense of loss, living inauthentically (only you know), loneliness.

High: creativity, meditation, breathwork, gratitude, connecting with like minded people, nature, acts of kindness.

Side note: The above two energy types, emotional & spiritual, sit within our feminine energy, which focuses more on how we integrate our life and stay present.

Okay, so what now?

Give me 5 minutes and let's do a quick activity.

Get out a piece of paper and draw a line down the centre horizontally, and then one vertically. You now have your four areas for energy.

Label each area: physical, mental, emotional, spiritual

Now it's time to decode your own energy map!

Step One:

Close your eyes and think about when you are feeling really drained in each of these areas. What are you doing? What have you done? Where are you? Who are you with? Think about this in as much detail as possible and then write them down with a red pen into the corresponding areas.

Step Two:

Let's do the above exercise again, but this time we are thinking about when we are feeling our best. You're energised, high vibing, smiling ear to ear, your heart is full, you feel like you could run a marathon!

What are you doing? What have you done? Where are you? Who are you with?

Write these answers down in each area in a green coloured pen.

Step Three:

Now, how you can reduce the things that you have written down in red, and how you can increase the things you have written down in green.

This list has you all set up to think about where you could make some positive changes to AMP UP your energy! It's showing you what is draining you and what is energising you.

So now the real question is, what small change will you make today to get you feeling more energised?

I'd love to hear in the comments below.
